Proverbs 1

<READ PROVERBS 1 ON BIBLE GATEWAY>

I’m so glad you have chosen to join us for the 31 Day Challenge! The goal is to read and reflect on one chapter from the book of Proverbs each day during the month of July.

Over the next 31 days, staff members and other leaders from Cove Church will be sharing their observations and thoughts about the daily readings. Our prayer is that these thoughts will serve as a catalyst for conversation about what we’re learning together. We would love to hear what you’re learning and how God is speaking to you during this time.

The book of Proverbs, along with Ecclesiastes and Job, is part of the Hebrew scripture known as Wisdom Literature. The purpose of this collection of sayings from King Solomon is clearly stated in Proverbs 1:2-7. In short, that purpose is to attain wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to make godly choices in life, by applying God’s truth. It seems to me we could all benefit from growing in this area!

Verse 5 sticks out to me. “…let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.”

You’ve all heard the phrase, “the rich get richer.” It seems the wise get wiser as well. Why? Because the wise listen. I find it interesting that the word listen occurs four times in chapter 1 and 23 times overall in the book of Proverbs.

My prayer for you during this 31 day journey is that the Holy Spirit will give you “ears to hear” the truths most needed in your life each day.

What did you hear God say to you as you read chapter 1?

Blessings,

John Tanner

  2. Proverbs challenge begins! Favorite verse from Chapter 1 (vs. 7)..."Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." Basically, I've got to proactively invite the Holy Spirit and those who walk in Him to have the hard conversations with me...

  3. He said listen. But whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm" - Proverbs 1:33 …sounds like a good reason to trust in Him.

  4. Just read chapter 1 with my family. My favorite was verse 7, but I really enjoyed reading (and re-reading) verse 8 with my kids. :)
